The imaging services department provides a comprehensive range of ultrasound examinations for children under the age of 17years. The scans are performed by consultant paediatric radiologists and our highly skilled sonographers.

Renal Tract: This scan demonstrates the anatomy of the kidneys and the urinary bladder using ultrasound waves. The only preparation needed for this type of examination is to have a full bladder when arriving to the department.

Pelvic scan: This scan demonstrates all the organs in the pelvis. A very full bladder is required for this type of scan.

Abdominal scan: An abdominal scan demonstrates all the organs in the abdomen (liver, gall bladder, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, lymph nodes, appendix) This scan is not the optimal study for examining for bowel related problems. For this examination a period of fasting might be required and it is best to contact the department for the necessary preparation requirements.

Hip scan: Ultrasound scans of the hips are performed to exclude pathology such as congenital hip dysplasia and hip dislocation in the first few months after birth, especially in babies who were in a breech presentation until birth. This type of scan can also be done in young children with painful hips to exclude fluid collections in the hip joints.

Soft tissue: This scan is performed on any strange lumps and bumps on any surface area, testes, swollen lymph glands in the neck, deep/hairy dimples on the lower spine of newborn infants and the thyroid gland

Head and ventricles: This scan is performed on, usually, prematurely born babies, to assess normal development of the cranial structures

Musculoskeletal scan: This scan looks at any of the limb joints to exclude swelling and fluid collection of the joints.
