Paediatric Imaging Services >> Bone Densitometry

Bone Densitometry plays an important role in the assessment of bone mineral density and total body composition. This is relevant to patients who may have undergone organ transplantation, suffer from eating disorders or show signs of other endocrine symptoms and those patients with specific bone disorders such as osteoporosis.

The Lunar Prodigy Densitometer enables routine spine and thigh bone examinations to be completed in less than 15 minutes, including image evaluation and calculations. Using the National Osteoporosis Society guidelines, most patients will have a 3-view osteo scan performed to include the lower lumbar spine and both hips, unless specific circumstances dictate otherwise.

The machine also has a SmartScan feature which assists in reducing scan acquisition times by automatically locating bone, eliminating the need for scout scans and reducing the radiation field to the area of interest, therefore also further assisting the reduction in radiation dose and the overall examination time.
