Who can benefit from a Cochlear implant?
Cochlear Implants can be beneficial to adults who have lost their hearing after acquiring spoken language and who have no useful hearing with conventional hearing aids as well as children who are born deaf or prove to have a progressive hearing loss. The optimum age for intervention is as near to the first birthday as possible although congenitally deaf children are considered up to the age of five.
Can a Cochlear implant 'cure' deafness ?
No. The patient will remain deaf when not wearing his/her speech processor and the sensation of sound that it gives, will vary from patient to patient. However, all patients will have enhanced communication and many will hear well enough to be able to use the telephone. Children implanted early have the possibility of developing speech and language as their normally hearing peers.
How do we arrange for payment for Cochlear Implants?
If you are insured, you should check with your medical insurance companies if you are covered otherwise the procedure can be self funded and patients from overseas have a variety of sponsors.
